Smallwood and Caribo

Ex Marine Atlantic Ferries Joseph and Clara Smallwood and Caribou were both sold earlier this year and re-flagged in St. Kits Nevis. Both are due in to port today for bunkers, likely their last Canadian stops.

As part of their Conversion to a foreign flag, both vessels were renamed - Joseph and Clara Smallwood to simply Smallwood, and Caribou dropped the 'U' to become Caribo.

Caribo is due at 1900 tonight. Smallwood is currently bunkering, and expected to depart at 1600

UPDATE: Caribo Arrived at 1900, and both sailed separately overnight. Smallwood gave Port Said Egypt as the Destination, and Caribo Gibraltar.

Waiting Out Irene

Kongo Star and AFL New England.

Departed Imperial Oil for Anchor to take on Supplies. She will sail later today.

AFL New England Departed for Fairview Cove, for Pier 42. This is her first stop at Halterm, and shows growth in the service. You can see she has some containers from Fairview, so there is definitely traffic on the route.

A Short Stay

The general cargo ship Levante made a brief appearance, likely to pick up Supplies.
Short stays at anchor are common for bunkers, but the Algoma Dartmouth didn't tie up.

She arrived late morning, and departed just after 1400.

Export Locomotives

Jumbo Spirit is a g500 Class Heavy lift vessel. She features a 250t Crane (aft) and a 250t Derrick forward. The locomotive lift appears to be accomplished with only the crane.

She is Scheduled to sail at 1900 tonight.

S/V Bowdoin

Built in East Boothbay, Maine, 1921 Bowdoin was built for arctic service. She became the Official sailing vessel of Maine in 1986 and has crossed the Arctic Circle 27 times. She is now serves as the sail training vessel for the Maine Maritime Academy

The Self Unloading Bulker Baldock Arrived for Bunkers this morning. She sailed around noon.

Frisian Summer Loaded telephone poles and departed yesterday for Europe.

Finally the Tanker Pacific Innovator anchored, before taking her spot at Imperial Oil

Japanese Navy Departs

The Japanease Navy Departed this morning,
After Leaving the Dockyard, They formed up in the Basin, with HMCS Ville De Quebec Taking the Lead.

JS Kashima Followed

Crews from all vessels were on Deck to wave. Ville de Quebec seemed to be hosting a family day.

Sambro Island Light

The oldest Lighthouse in North America and the Caribbean, built in 1758 as a landfall lighthouse (meant to help mariners find land) She is visible for 24 Nautical miles (44km) You Cann See the light to the top left of the page in the background image. (which is a chart of Halifax by Captain Cook.
Every year, as part of Sambro Days, the NS Lighthouse Preservation Society runs 1 day tours of the island. A good view can be had from Sandy Cove.

The Island features a tight Harbour

The dock is a flatish rock with iron loops anchored to it for boats to tie up.

Saudi Diriyah

Saudi Diriyah Made a Quick Stopover. She was in port for only a couple of hours. Owned by the Saudi National Shipping Line, NSCSA Vessels will stop whenever there is cargo for them in halifax.

AFL New England

The AFL New England is falling into its schedule. She arrives on Wed,and offloads at fairview cove. Lately she has been able to remain tied to the pier until friday when loads are added, and she sails. This week was the same, however she moved to anchorage in the basin on friday rahter then putting to sea. It would seem there was likely no return traffic, and nothing coming to halifax next week.

Collecting Tankers

Imperial oil is still shutdown due to a lighting stike/ moved up planed maintinance. As a result, there seems to be a collection of tankers waiting to depart with product, since loaded tankers seem to have no problems unloading.

The Shuttle Tanker Mattea Arrived, offloaded and left.

Marvea Anchored, Uloaded and then Procceded to anchor in the basin.

Meriom Glory Unloaded and anchored up in the basin.

Alpine Hallie breifly anchored, and the began to offload at IOL.

Finally the Sichem Osprey arrived at the outer anchorage this morning.

Boa Mighty

Boa Mighty arrived to collect the Boa Barge 36.
She is much smaller then Salvenguard who towed the barge to halifax, though Salvenguard also had to tow the Platform out with it. I missed The barge leaving, however prior to tieing up, Boa Mighty did a compass swing in the anchorage.

Japanese Naval Vessels

As previously reported, 2/3 vessels were open for tours.

They are also well lit at night while tied up.

Japanease Navy Visitors

Arriving in port this morning are 3 Vessels on the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. They were originally scheduled to arrive on the 11th, Hence them anchoring, instead of tying up directly at the dockyard.

JS Asagiri (TV 3516) an Asagiri Class Destroyer - now classed as a Training Vessel

Todays Traffic

The SE Viridian Tied Up at Pier 30. She was carrying a cargo of wind turbine Parts. Owned by ES Shipping lines,who specialize in Wind turbine cargo, she was built in 1998.

Also Arriving and picking up her Pilot at 1100 with SE Viridian, was the Tsing Ma Bridge - a regular on the K-Line Route.

The Geja C remained tied up at Pier 27.

And the Cruise Ship Ocean Princess was at Pier 22. This is her first trip of the year to Halifax.

Todays CCGS Activities

Edward Cornwallis Departing on a SAR tasking.

Shortly After, Alfred Needler returned and tied up at BIO. Primarraly a research vessel (hence her fishing (stern) trawler form, She is one of the CG ships to be replaced as part of the Government's Ship Procurement Strategy. Her Sister shipe, the Wilfred Templeman has been renamed 2011-1 and Put up for Auction in St John's NF.

Updates From the Past Week

Weather has kept Spotting to a minimum.

Salvanguard arrived with Boa Barge 36. They are now tied up at pier 25/26.They Were installing the Production Platform for Deep Panuke.

The Tanker Acadian Anchored, then moved to IOL. She departed On Thursday.

The AFL New England Arrived on Wed, and tied up at Fairview Cove, Offloading containers. She loaded today, and is scheduled to sail Today at 15:30

Locomotives arrived at Halterm, So expect a visit from Jumbo Shipping. This load is equipped with "normal" couplers, so I suspect they are for a North American Client. If anyone Trainspotters know what they are, please Comment.

“These units are GT38ACe, build at EMD London for PTKA Sumatra in Indonesia. Six units have been ordered and from what I gather all are finished and in-transit.

These are the first units of this model to be built. They feature an eight cylinder 710 and narrow gauge trucks (hence the need to be transported on flat cars). ”

African Fern Tied up at the Grain Elevator. Her Sister African Dahlia was in port a few months ago.
