Kometik Sold

Word reached me last night that the Hiberina Shuttle tanker Kometik has been sold to Andromeda Shipping, and is now bound for Rotterdam.

Andromeda Shipping is a Indian Firm, who appear to own a fleet of 6 tankers.

Irving Wharf Demolition almost complete

 Demolition on the Irving wharf is almost complete, with only the large concrete mooring points and a portion of the access pier remaining.

Night Work.

The port runs 24/7. Sometimes its worth staying up late to see whats going on.

The Container ship Zim Costanza noses into pier 42, after the birth was vacated by Baltic Mercur II, bound for Tampa.

Atlantic Condor at Pier 9

Ocean Arctique with barges for the big lift

Due tonight is the tug Ocean Arctique. The tug is tandem towing two barges, abys and timberland to be used by American Bridge co. For the big lift.

The tug was finished at the Halifax shipyard, and the barge timberland was owned by the yard until it was sold in 2008. 

The tow has been slow, not making more then 6 knots, and only 2 for most of the day. The tug and tow are due to tie up at pier 9. As of midnight they had reached the pilot station

UPDATE: they did not come in last night. Now due to try again Noonish.

UPDATE: They picked up the pilot at noon, and  finally made Anchorage 1 by 2:30. here the tow was separated, and the barges moved to the Cherubini wharf. Above, Lady Shirleen and Belle D from RMI Marine are moving the Ocean Abys, Timberland is still in tow of Ocean Arctique

CCGS Edward Cornwallis refit this August.

 The Feds announced on Friday that NEWDOCK St. John's Dockyard Limited for important refit and maintenance work for the CCGS Edward Cornwallis.

The CCGS Edward Cornwallis is a high-endurance multi-tasked vessel, light icebreaker and buoy tending vessel based at BIO. Maintenance work includes refurbishment of the hull, galley deck, tanks, propeller tail shaft, and auxiliary and domestic systems.

The Work is scheduled to begin in August, and be completed by October 2015.

Full Pier on Sunday

 

Fairview Cove saw 2 vessels on Sunday. The West birth was taken by  NYK Rumina, Covering the West bound Pacific Atlantic Service. She arrived from Rotterdam, and was bound for New York.

Seoul express is Covering the East bound route of the Pacific Atlantic Service. She Arrived from New York, and tied up at the East Birth. On Departure, she was bound for Southampton.

CCGS Samuel Risley Filling In.

With the CCGS Earl Gray undergoing a Mid-life refit, Sister vessel CCGS Samuel Risley is in town filling in. the Risley is the same class of vessel and design as the Earl Grey, and was built by Vito Steel Boat and Barge of Delta, British Columbia in 1984. (Earl Grey was built in Pictou in 1985)

She is normally based in Parry Sound Ontario and operates in the great lakes.


the ship is named after Samuel Risley, the first Chairman of the Board of Steamship Inspection in 1858.

Visit to the St Roch

Captained by Henry Larsen, the RCMP schooner St. Roch was the first ship to completely circumnavigate North America and the second sailing vessel to complete a voyage through the Northwest Passage. She was the first ship to complete the Northwest Passage in the direction west to east, and returned east to west.

She is now part of the Maritime Museum in Vancouver. We have posted a tour on our Flickr page:

Harbour Taxi

the Kings wharf harbour taxi is now in service running between Kings Wharf in Dartmouth, and Sackville landing in Halifax. They also offer trips to the Arm, Mcnabs, and along the waterfront.

The vessel interior looks to be quite spacious. Expect an update after I have gone for a ride.

Christopher Stannix is Back

After a brief haul out in Sambro, the Stannix arrived back over the noon hour.
The issue is reportedly to be with one of the Voith drives, and there is no word currently if it is fixed, or when the boat will return to service.

Missing

Last night a Silver Pandora Bracelet with 4 charms was lost along the board walk, somewhere between Cows and East Coast Lifestyle, by the seaport market.

It has sentimental Value.

Phase 2 Arctic Survey set to begin.

From August 7 to September 17, 2015, the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent and the CCGS Terry Fox will be  on a six week scientific survey to collect data needed for Canada’s Arctic continental shelf submission to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Geological Survey of Canada, part of Natural Resources Canada, and the Canadian Hydrographic Service, part of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, are responsible for this scientific work.  The vessels will survey an area in the Eurasian Basin on the Lomonosov Ridge and areas in the vicinity of the North Pole.

This is the second phase of work that was started by these 2 ships last summer.

Irving Oil Wharf work under way.

The Irving's are definitely doing work on on their wharf next to imperial oil.
Condemned and dis-used, it now appears to be in the process of being repaired. It looks like the Deck has been removed, and loose concrete is being chipped away.

work was first rumored in late 2013 and It was noticed that core drilling appeared to be taking place on site last year.

Christopher Stannix Sails

The harbour ferry Christopher Stannix Sailed for Sambro to be Dry Docked.
Still no word on what the issue is.

Canadian Maritime Engineering (AKA CME) has a marine railway in Sambro, and has done work on The Pilot Boats in the past.

Svitzer Nerthus and Svitzer Njal Sail

The Svitzer tugs Svitzer Nerthus and Svitzer Njal Sailed this morning bound or Milne Inlet on Bafin Island. They arrived in June, and are to work a contract for the new Iron Ore mine there.

interestingly, they didn't take Canadian names.  Nerthus is the Germanic Goddess of Fertility, hailing from an island in Denmark. Njal refers to a Character from an Icelandic Saga written in the late 1200's.

Dartmouth Ferry Christopher Stannix is Broken

Halifax Transit Issued a press release yesterday about ferry schedule changes "due to ongoing mechanical assessment of one of its vessels, the Christopher Stannix"

the release continues "Halifax Transit staff conducted an initial assessment of the issue earlier this week, and have determined that the vessel must be brought out of the water to conduct a complete evaluation. It’s anticipated that the vessel will be out of service for several weeks to accommodate this work"

Sounds like a problem with one of the Voith Drives. No word on where she will be dry docked.

Bluenose in Town

The new Bluenose has made her first call in Halifax, arriving last night. Tied up the the Maritime Museum, her deck is open for wandering.
