EX HMCS Cormorant Update

After the owners failed to come up with a reasonable salvage plan, the coast guard turned over responaibility of the salvage to RMI Marine.

The Mini Sub is apparently still aboard, and the source of the flooding is still unknown, though some appears to be tidal. The Coast guard Published the following Pictures:

Marine Atlantic today announced they were outright buying the Ferries Highlanders and Blue Puttees. Both Ferries were chartered from Stena since 2011. They were lengthend for Canadian service and additional accommodation added.

ZIM London arrives empty

A sure sign of trouble, ZIM London is riding high in the water and is being fully unloaded at pier 42.

She arrived today after stopping in La Havre France outbound from Rotterdam.

Update: she arrived empty from Europe and will load 900 boxes before sailing.

Atlantic Huron unloads at grain elevator

Atlantic Huron arrived this morning at tied up at pier 25. She is self unloading to the grain elevator and based on her draft is fully loaded.

US Navy submarine due tommorow

Rumors are About that a US Navy vessel is due in port tomorrow. It reportedly has US and Canadian escorts, which suggests it might be an aircraft carrier...

The US Memorial Day weekend is coming up, so its not uncommon to Have US Visitors that weekend.

update: U.S. Navy submarine is due tommorow around 9am. She is due to tie up at shearwater so we know it's a nuclear powered vessel.

Disney Magic Made a stop in Halifax Today. Disney added Halifax to their itinerary in 2013, but removed it for 2014. This is the only stop this year, and the vessel had originally intended to bypass us for St John's Newfoundland.

Disney Magic is on a repositioning cruise from Florida to the Baltic. The Cruise left Port Canaveral, Florida on the 15th headed for New York; St Johns, Newfoundland; Reykjavik, Iceland; Oslo, Norway; and ending in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 29th.

In other news, Norwgian Gem ran aground on a reef off Bermuda yesterday. She was freed at high tied, and moved to Kings wharf in Bermuda. She is due in Halifax in September.

Herring Fleet back again

May brings the annual return of the herring fleet. Most of the usual vessels are back with the addtion of a new vessel has shown up this year, pictured below.

Herring are caught via a Purse Seine. A net is pulled around the school of fish, the bottom pulled tight, which forms a bowl out of the net, and then the fish are pumped into the fish hold on board.

Kometik for Sale?

Shuttle tanker Kometik is rumoured to be for sale. the vessel is 17 years old, and apparently there is some sort of disagreement amongst the ownership group. She is currently owned by a consortium of Oil companies as listed as A JOINT VENTURE OF MOBIL, CHEVRON, MURPHY

She was built by Samsung Heavy industries in 1997, and is managed by Canship Ugland.
As a Shuttle Tanker, She runs oil from Hiberina to Various refineries. She was a frequent caller in Halifax, while imperial Oil Was in operation.

The Grand Ruby spent part of the day at ancor in the inner harbour. The PCTC Electra occupied the birth at autoport for most of the day. By 1700 Electra had moved to pier 30, allowing grand ruby to take her place.

Canada 2014 no more, Fundy Rose the Princess of Acadia Replacement

The government somewhat quietly announced  this past Friday that the replacement vessel for the MV Princess of Acadia, which serves the Saint John to Digby ferry route, will be named the MV Fundy Rose.

The MV Fundy Rose is a combination of the top names submitted by Canadians as part of a public naming process launched earlier this year.

The first part of the name reflects the renowned tidal level and water volume, the ocean conditions and world-wide appreciation of the Bay of Fundy.

The second part of the name reflects Rose Fortune, a woman born into slavery and relocated to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, after her family escaped the British colony of Virginia during the American Revolution. She developed a successful business transporting luggage from the ferry docks to Annapolis hotels and homes via wheelbarrow. She also offered a wake-up service to customers to make certain they caught their boat to Digby or Saint John on time. Over time, Rose Fortune became known as the first female police officer in Canada – an unofficial title she earned by maintaining order and safeguarding property at the town's wharves.

The MV Fundy Rose was purchased by the Government of Canada in October 2014 from a private ferry operator in Greece at a cost of approximately $31 million EURO ($44.6 million CAN).  She was built in 2000 by Daewoo Industries. It is 124 metres in length and 19 metres in breadth, with a cruising speed of 20 knots. It has modern onboard amenities and segregated car and vehicle decks.

Since its arrival in Canada in December 2014, the MV Fundy Rose has been dockside in Halifax undergoing a main engine overhaul; replacement of carpeting and tiles; installation of a truckers' lounge, a children's play area and a business lounge; upgrades to computer equipment, kitchen equipment and life saving equipment; improving bow and stern door hydraulics; upgrading alarm, monitoring and engine control systems; and fuel oil tank cleaning.

Stadt Cadiz at Pier 9b - Engine Troubles

Pier 9 is collecting a selection of Damaged vessels. The most recent addition is the Stadt Cadiz, which is the operated by CMA-CGM as their contribution to their shared service with Maersk.

She arrived, late, from Montreal last week, and then unloaded all her boxes and proceeded to pier 9. It is unclear if she will be repaired here, or will be towed to a shipyard somewhere.

The Bulk Carrier Harefield is still tied up, awaiting repairs to her damaged rudder. though work seems to have resumed in the past few days.

MEI HUA HAI for CFIA Inspection

the Chinese Bulk Carrier MEI HUA HAI put in for Gypsy moth inspection, anchoring in Anchorage 1. She sailed for Port Cartier PQ, just after Noon.

The tanker SeaPike spent yesterday at anchor. She moved to imperial oil this morning after the departure of Apollon. Built in 2009, she is German Flagged, and arrived from New Orleans.

Sunday Saw CCGS Hudson and CCGS Sir William Alexander exercising with a CCGS Helicopter in the basin. the helicopter had left by the time I arrived, and the vessels were returning to BIO.
